96 In contrast to the general style of the vintage, this is still aromatically austere though with coaxing, reveals wonderfully complex aromas of a simply incredible array of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of chocolate with flavors that are huge but fine, powerful but subtle and rich yet detailed with a stupendously long finish that offers intense minerality. This is genuinely stunning juice and not to be missed if you have the chance. Tasted multiple times with mostly consistent notes save for one recent bottle that displayed a lot of volatile acidity that may have been due to a faulty cork and another that displayed distinct lactic aromas.

95+ Saturated ruby-red, the darkest of these '99s. Knockout nose of black raspberry, violet, minerals and spices; complex and vibrant. Large-scaled but fine, with lovely verve and lift. A wine with great energy and spine, but also silkier than the other '99s at this address. Tannins are ripe and quite fine. Offers a real whiplash of a finish, with subtle notes of berries and gunflint saturating the palate.

93 Nice concentration of fruit and oak complexity. Medium-bodied, with blackberries and toasted and smoky notes. Plenty of toasted oak and chocolate on the finish, which kicks in with fresh acidity. Well-made. Drink now through 2009.
