July 31, 200096 Monster Brunello. Very dark in color, withsuperripe aromas of black licorice, dried plum,mint and meat. Full-bodied, with masses of velvetytannins and a long, long finish. Best version ofthis Tuscan red since the legendary 1990Montosoli. Give it time. Best after 2004. 5,000 cases made.
August 200093 Extremely evolved and precocious is the 1995 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli. A dark ruby/plum color is followed by a sweet, complex, jammy nose of spice box, vanilla, cedar, and intensely ripe strawberry and black cherry fruit. As it hits the palate, it reveals superb richness, an easy-going, open-knit texture, reasonable levels of acidity, soft tannin, and a nicely-layered finish. I would consume it over the next decade. One of my favorite Tuscan estates, Altesino's wines are consistently among the finest of the region.
