Deep, ruby red. Well-focused, signature aromas of underbrush and forest floor abound in this wine. Also notes of tea, tobacco, mocha, leather, licorice, cedar, black currant, and violets. It is a wine of considerable depth, complexity, and staying power. A rich and full entry follows with equal measures of power and elegance. Ripe, supple tannins are present in the finish and contribute to its extended staying power, lift, and length.

A wine of purity, definition, and harmony that combines a more elegant, structured style, similar to the 1994 with the ripe, viscous qualities of the 1997. The wine is classic Harlan Estate, with a very long life ahead of it, though much of its potential is still in hiding. Lay this one down for 5+ years and then drink for 30+ (50?) years.

Actual Magnum from our inventory is pictured. These bottles are in excellent condition, from their original wooden case and all fills are into the neck. All bottles are as good or better than the bottle pictured. 100 This wine, which first debuted in 1990, has probably garnered more perfect scores than any other Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2001 is just entering a young adolescent stage of development, exhibiting extraordinary nuances such as sweet, loamy soil and earthy minerality intermixed with some background smoke, black currant liqueur, plum, Asian spice and new saddle leather. Full-bodied, it possesses great intensity, with stunning flavors that are viscous enough to coat the mouth, but never become heavy or overbearing. The wine has a remarkable purity, concentration and intensity that should carry it for another 30+ years. This is already very promising, and for those who own it, I would suggest a good two to three hours of decanting prior to service.

97 Firm and intense, with gripping tannins wrapped around dark berry, black licorice, graphite, cedar and tar. Slow to unfold but does so impressively, gaining strength, depth and vitality; appears a great candidate to go another 10 to 15 years with ease.—2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now through 2025. 1,250 cases made.

96+ Deep ruby-red. Highly complex but subdued nose melds currant, dried cherry, violet, clove, licorice and dusty herbs; less obviously ripe than the 2002 but also much subtler today. Mineral-driven, sharply delineated and classic, with strong mineral, spice and dark fruit flavors carrying through to the impressively long, rising finish, which boasts superb energy and lingering graphite minerality. This is Pauillac to the 2002's Pomerol, and is also structured for a long and positive evolution in bottle. A great and classic example of its vintage.
