October 200395 Saturated ruby-red. Bright, pure aromas of cassis, licorice and bitter chocolate. Juicy and sweet, with an almost liqueur-like flavor of cassis pastille. Wonderfully dense and thick but with great clarity and harmony and already showing captivating inner-mouth perfume. Compelling building finish features melting tannins buried in fruit. A standout of the vintage. This seems even more youthful than my memory of the basic 1997 bottling. A relative Brunello bargain, if you can find it in the retail marketplace.
August 200694 What a treat it is to taste the 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Pianrosso on this day. Medium-red in color, it offers an expressive, ethereal nose with notes of roses, tar and tobacco that float out of the glass along with soft, perfumed fruit in a delicate, captivating interplay of sensations and aromas. Although this bottle had been decanted for three hours prior to my visit to the estate it nevertheless appeared somewhat closed. Still fresh, it promises to provide memorable drinking for at least another decade although my guess is that the wine's structure will ultimately outlast the fruit. Regardless, it is utterly irresistible right now.
Web Only - 200794 Dark ruby. Youthful aromas of blackberry, cherry and mineral, with a hint of flowers. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a long, long finish. I love the berry, leather and floral flavors.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Drink now through 2017. 550 cases made.
December 200293 The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva may not hit the heights of the remarkable 1997 regular bottling, but it is still a fascinating wine. Its deep garnet color is accompanied by a big, sweet nose of melted asphalt, truffles, soy, tobacco, leather, and glorious quantities of red currant and black cherry fruit. Dense, ripe, layered, and sweet, it may not be as exuberant as the regular bottling, but it is a brilliant effort nevertheless. This is one 1997 Brunello that lives up to the vintage's reputation. Anticipated maturity: now-2015.
